Expanded polystyrene or EPS is a thermoplastic foam material that we produce from solid beads of polystyrene. Extruded polystyrene or XPS is a foam material that we produce from solid polystyrene crystals. Therefore, in the production process, we need special additives and blowing agents along with polystyrene crystals.

We feed these components into an extruder. There, the mixture combines perfectly and melts under controlled conditions such as high temperatures pressures.XPS cells contain insulating gases in addition to air that eventually diffuses out of the cells, thus lowering the insulating value.

The R-factor of EPS remains constant over the life of the product because the manufacturing process used in EPS results in normal air, rather than gas, in the voids in the product. While XPS is "extruded" into a close approximation of its final form, EPS is manufactured in large blocks that are subsequently cut by hot-wire machines into sheets or cut into virtually any special shape or form by computer-driven systems.

EPS is also easily worked in the field during installation. EPS can be recycled in many ways once it comes to the end of its life. These include recycling directly into new building products and incineration to recover its inherent energy content. The choice of a recycling method is based on technical, environmental and economic considerations.

Finally, XPS is often branded by its manufacturer and frequently comes in a number of different colors which have nothing to do with performance. Since XPS is typically more expensive than EPS, buyers need to closely compare the tables of properties for each product as compared to the needs of the application.

There are three basic foam insulation board products on the market produced under several different manufacturer names. The basic types of foam board insulation include: polystyrene, polyurethane or polyisocyanurate. DOW products has lots of information on their site about different foam board products here. Expanded polystyrene foam EPS is the cheapest and least used foam board product on the market. This product typically has an R value of 3. It is also sometimes used on commercial buildings for roof and wall panel insulation which is typically sandwiched between light gauge metal.

Extruded polystyrene foam XPS also known as blue board or pink board comes in many different thicknesses and edge profiles. This insulation board is probably one of the most widely used foam board insulation products in the residential construction industry. XPS has an R value of 4. This is the product that I typically use to insulate basement walls. This product is also used to insulate the outside of foundation walls and even under slabs. Polyisocyanurate also known as polyiso is seen in all kinds of commercial building applications and more recently with residential building projects.

Polyiso is typically used with a foil facing and it has an R value of 7. The reflective foil facing makes it an excellent insulation board when radiant heat is involved. The foil facing also makes it very easy to seal with good quality foil faced tapes. Polyurethane and polyisocyanurate are both closed-cell foams.

Polystyrene can be solid or foamed. Polystyrene is a colorless, transparent thermoplastic, which is commonly used to make foam board or beadboard insulation and a type of loose-fill insulation consisting of small beads of polystyrene.

Polystyrene foams are good thermal insulators and are therefore often used as building insulation materials, such as in insulating concrete forms and structural insulated panel building systems. Expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene are both made from polystyrene, but EPS is composed of small plastic beads that are fused together and XPS begins as a molten material that is pressed out of a form into sheets.

XPS is most commonly used as foam board insulation. Extruded polystyrene XPS is also a thermoplastic polymer. Extruded polystyrene has a closed cell structure and is often stronger, with a higher mechanical performance and is, in principle, often more expensive than EPS.

The production process of e xtruded polystyrene is only slightly different from expanded polystyrene. It can be used for the insulation of buildings, roofs and concrete floors. Extruded polystyrene material can be also used in crafts and model building, in particular architectural models.

Although both expanded and extruded polystyrene have a closed-cell structure, they are permeable by water molecules and can not be considered a vapor barrier.

In expanded polystyrene there are interstitial gaps between the expanded closed-cell pellets that form an open network of channels between the bonded pellets. If the water freezes into ice, it expands and can cause polystyrene pellets to break off from the foam. The organic insulation materials treated in this section are all derived from a petrochemical or renewable feedstock bio-based.

Almost all of the petrochemical insulation materials are in the form of polymers. As can be see from the figure, all petrochemical insulation materials are cellular. A material is cellular when the structure of the material consists of pores or cells. On the other hand, many plants contain fibres for their strength, therefore almost all the bio-based insulation materials are fibrous except expanded cork, which is cellular. Thermal conductivity is defined as the amount of heat in watts transferred through a square area of material of given thickness in metres due to a difference in temperature.

In general, thermal insulation is primarily based on the very low thermal conductivity of gases. Gases possess poor thermal conduction properties compared to liquids and solids, and thus makes a good insulation material if they can be trapped e. Air and other gases are generally good insulators.
