I have never had a bad transformer since I began in business in Please do not install a transformer unless you know what you are doing. I have had customers install transformers in amps that had power supply shorts and other problems. It is rare, but It is possible for you to destroy a perfectly good transformer. Anyone working on an amp should be properly diagnosing the problems instead of just throwing parts at the problem and hoping it fixes the problem.
If you do not agree with my No returns on transformers policy, then please do not buy a transformer. If you are qualified to install a transformer in an amp and know what you are doing, then by all means git-R-dun. If you need technical help, please go to my amp forum. The guys there are awesome and love to help. Common scenarios I see all the time: No sound output from the amp, it must be an output transformer, right?
Power transformer blows fuses and so it must be the power tranny, right? Power transformer still blows fuses after you install a new one and so it must be a bad transformer, right? You are right this time No, I'm joking Sorry about all of the above, I just want to make sure you understand my policy on transformers before you buy one.
Make sure you know exactly what you are doing before you buy and install a transformer. Projects, Mods, Transformer diagrams, Photo's, Sound clips. Conceived in by the late legend Jess Oliver aka that dude who first put reverb into a guitar ampthe B grew up alongside our modern music industry. Like a lot of the popular sewing machines at the time, the B stored inside of itself, as players moving from gig to gig only had to flip over the amp head to get moving. Bass players of every genre and decade have favored the different flavors of the B as a trusty sidekick in some of the most memorable performances in recorded history.
Motown fixture and demigod James Jamerson used a B for all of his live performances as well as the majority of his non-Motown sessions in Los Angeles. Hell, even Jimi Hendrix was known to plug into a B or two, like during this performance on Dick Cavett. The evolution of the B is truly fascinating. This article will examine those differences chronologically to help better understand what you can expect from the dusty Portaflex at your local shop.
Geared toward acoustic bassists, this initial model featured extra porting options for use with upright basses. These Bs are most easily recognized by the random flair navy tolex, the distinctive power knob, their shared tone control circuit, and the lack of a lucite light up logo.
The first Bs were self-biased and outputted 25 watts of tube power. At this point, the two channels had independent volume controls but actually shared an equalization circuit. The outer baffle had a inch circular cut out and a bar across the center of the speaker cone. The speaker was mounted to the inner baffle, which was fixed to the cabinet. The first edition B only lasted about eight months before acquiring a few key controls, and a little sister amp, the BN.
This updated B would be dubbed the BN. James Jamerson was a notable early Ampeg endorser, though the vast majority of Motown recordings were DIed.
Check out this live picture of him with his first edition B You can clearly see by the random flair tolex on the sides of the amp head and the lack of a light-up Ampeg logo that this amp was either an original B, or an early model BN late This new B retained the same random navy flair tolex, yet added in two separate channels with separate bass and treble tone controls, an updated negative feedback resistor which was changed from 6, ohms to Stereo input, and introduced a second jack on the first channel.Another DOOZY! - Mesa Boogie Tube Bass 400 Head Repair
A few months later inthe B received three important features before the model number was updated: its hallmark light-up lucite insignia that would last until the amp was remodeled in and its tilt-back rod, which only lasted until These amplifiers from are extremely rare, and you can tell them apart from any other B because of the combination of navy random flair tolex and a lucite light up logo.
First, and perhaps least functionally, Ampeg finally started to use its distinctive blue checkered vinyl. This aesthetic would last until Two, Ampeg briefly shifted its tube rectifier to a solid-state diode rectifier.
Ampeg also upgraded the multi-section can capacitor, though this change only held untilwhen Ampeg returned to using a tube rectifier. Functionally, the two features operate similarly, but you can always spot a BNB by the presence of an XLR speaker jack, blue-checkered vinyl, and a lack of an impedance switch on the back panel.
The BNC is most easily distinguished under the hood by its printed circuit board, double-baffled cabinet structure the last of its breedand a reintroduced tube rectifier. Toward the end ofthe BNB regained its rectifier tube and appropriate power transformer, and was re-dubbed the BNC. Instead of reverting to the 5U4GB rectifier used in the primitive B, Oliver chose to use a 5AR4 tube rectifier that supplied less voltage drop or sag.
The BNC also was one of the first if not the first Ampeg amp to use a printed circuit board, drastically optimizing production times.
Similarly, Ampeg shifted the wiring behind its tone stack to a wired, plastic-coated, integrated circuit.
This updated B still maintained its 25W power rating, yet the new model did drop voltage down. The CTS speakers were far more rugged than the Jensens and also provided much sturdier bass response.
As you can expect, these amps are extremely rare. Around this time, Ampeg also introduced the B N, a behemoth amplifier endorsed by artists like Roger Waters. Showcasing an inch speaker, the B ran on entirely different circuitry. Please login or register. Carried over from the 'cursed' thread I need a replacement power transformer for my Ampeg B, did anyone try a modern replacement like this one below?
Proudly made in the USA. You will never get it back. We must never let up for a second. If it does the job, it does the job. These things are not actually in the audio path. If it provides the correct HT voltage at the same current draw, the amp will sound the same as it did before.
Really, the only possible issue is regulation. That is, as the current draw is increased as the amp is played louderwill the secondary voltage have the same characteristic sag, or lack thereof, as the original transformer. As you say, if it mounts correctly onto the chassis, looks right in the amp, and does the job OK, all is well. If it's a BN, it has a tube rectifier and the transformer must have a 5v rectifier winding.
The 70s BS has solid state recifiers diodes and the 5v winding is not required. In any amp, if the power transformer is replaced, the bias to the output tubes should always be checked and adjusted if necessary.
Good luck! Music can make me get right up out of my chair and start dancing or it can get me so pumped up I have to walk around the block. It can also knock me back and make me sit there and cry like a little baby.

They've made me trannies for an Ampeg Gemini, and a Supro. They are good. Larrchild Hero Member Offline Posts: Yeah, they made a Fairchild power choke.
They must be. Cash Hero Member Offline Posts: I have a B that needs a transformer and service also a Bassman black-face thats a basket case. All modern power x-former that have the CE certificate have a split bobbin design, the cheapest way to get the required high isolation voltage from primary to secondary.Dec 11, 1.
Apr 7, Buffalo, NY. It needs a transformer replacement though. I was wondering it's worth it for me to dive on this, I desperately need an amp. How much would it typically cost to have the the transformer replaced?
Also, I've read both good and bad stuff about the amps, so any "reviews" or advice would also be helpful i. Tubes, etc.
Thanks, Nate. Dec 11, 2. Mar 4, Central FL. I would say no. The transformers run about or more I believe, and I wouldn't suspect the transformer actually. Those are one of the beefyest components in there.
Dec 11, 3. Dec 11, 4. Dec 11, 5. Nov 14, St Louis. If it is certain the transformer is bad The transformers normally are beefy, and so is that one I have seen the low voltage winding get cut, which makes the transformer useless in the amp. One case where an "E-I" core transformer is better Dec 11, 6.
